“Oscuru” nasce come progetto site-specific per la mostra “Won’t u not see? capitolo C.”, curata da Emmanuel Lambion per gli spazi di On the Contemporary — in the Garden a Caltanissetta.
Il progetto installativo si fonda su questioni socio-antropologiche passate e presenti che nel territorio della Sicilia interna hanno assunto valenza caratterizzante.
Nel testo di presentazione, Emmanuel Lambion scrive: «[…] Alessandro Costanzo propone “Oscuru” (cioè buio in siciliano), una serie di installazioni scultoree che collegano in modo dialettico l'interno dello spazio con l'esterno, il giardino rigoglioso e semi-selvatico abbandonato. Come materia prima per le sue sculture, ha utilizzato un agglomerato di pietre miste che combina calcare, marna e gesso, che ha trovato nelle “zolfatare” abbandonate nel territorio della Sicilia interna. Le pietre grezze sono state parzialmente tagliate e forate per permettere alle voci cancellate o dimenticate di Caltanissetta di emergere e farsi sentire. Costanzo è riuscito a intervistare diversi ex “carusi” sopravvissuti al degrado delle “zolfatare”, insieme a migranti, ai quali ha chiesto di rievocare i momenti oscuri e bui del lungo viaggio che li ha portati in Sicilia e, infine, a Caltanissetta, dove la maggior parte di loro attende che il destino che li riguarda sia segnato (accolti o rimandati nei Paesi d'origine). Queste ultime interviste sono registrate in italiano “spezzato” e nelle loro lingue madri originali (wolof/pulaar). Le registrazioni si integrano tra loro e fuoriescono in modo flebile ma incisivo dalle sculture di pietra, che si caratterizzano come strane appendici degli elementi dell’arredo di questo spazio concepito come luogo d’arte e residenza. La più grande “scultura parlante in pietra” è collocata in giardino, come se la voce delle viscere di Caltanissetta e del suo recente passato cancellato stesse riemergendo dal terreno. […]
“Oscuru” was conceived as a site-specific project for the exhibition “Won’t u not see? Chapter C.,” curated by Emmanuel Lambion for space of On the Contemporary — in the Garden in Caltanissetta.
The installation project is rooted in past and present socio-anthropological issues that have become defining features of the inner Sicilian territory.
In the introductory text, Emmanuel Lambion writes: "Alessandro Costanzo presents 'Oscuru' (meaning 'dark' in Sicilian), a series of sculptural installations that dialectically connect the interior of the space with the exterior, the lush and semi-wild abandoned garden. As raw material for his sculptures, he used a conglomerate of mixed stones, combining limestone, marl, and gypsum, found in abandoned sulfur mines in inner Sicily. The rough stones were partially cut and drilled to allow the erased or forgotten voices of Caltanissetta to emerge and be heard. Costanzo managed to interview several former ‘carusi’ (child laborers) who survived the hardships of the sulfur mines, along with migrants, whom he asked to recall the dark and bleak moments of the long journey that brought them to Sicily and, ultimately, to Caltanissetta, where most await the fate that will determine whether they stay or are sent back to their countries of origin. These final interviews are recorded in broken Italian and in their original native languages (Wolof/Pulaar). The recordings blend together and subtly yet powerfully emerge from the stone sculptures, which act as strange extensions of the furnishings in this space, conceived as both an art venue and a residence. The largest 'talking stone sculpture' is placed in the garden, as if the voice of Caltanissetta's buried past were resurfacing from the ground."
